Summary: Many questions tend to appear about whether Polkadot can be added to MetaMask. The answer is straightforward, Polkadot can’t be added to MetaMask. The reason for this is that Metamask is designed to interact with EVM-compatible blockchains such as Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain and others. Polkadot uses the Substrate framework which is not compatible with Metamask. As such, the Polkadot blockchain can at this time not be added to MetaMask.

Add Polkadot To Metamask?
The short answer is that native DOT tokens can't be added to MetaMask because Polkadot is not an EVM-based (Ethereum Virtual Machine) blockchain. Polkadot uses the Substrate framework which is at the time of writing not compatible with the MetaMask wallet.
Having said this, it is possible to add wrapped DOT tokens via Binance Smart Chain. That is however not recommended as you take on additional risks when wrapping assets instead of using the native versions.
How To Add Polkadot To Metamask?
While MetaMask does not currently support Polkadot, there are many other wallets that do. Below is a selection of wallets that you can use to store your Polkadot (DOT) assets. Feel free to read out review of each wallet to decide if it's the right option for you.
At the time of writing, MetaMask does not support native assets from the Polkadot Blockchain. Only wrapped assets are supported via Binance Smart Chain. This may of course change in the future if and when MetaMask decides to support additional blockchain ecosystems.
About Polkadot
Polkadot is a heterogeneous blockchain protocol that unifies multiple specialised blockchains into one network.
It achieves scalability through parachains which is a sharding infrastructure with multiple blockchains running in parallel.
Substrate, Polkadots development framework, allows developers to build custom application-specific parachains.
The Relay Chain validates the state transition of the connected parachains, providing a shared state across the whole system.
Interoperability is enabled between parachains through the Cross-Chain Message Passing (XCMP) protocol and other systems through bridges.
The goal is to have 100 parachains connected to the Relay Chain.
About MetaMask
Metamask is a digital browser and mobile wallet that enables users to securely store, manage, and exchange tokens and coins from EVM-based blockchains, such as Ethereum, BSC, Evmos, and others.
It provides a simple way to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) across multiple ecosystems.
MetaMask was developed In 2016 by software development company ConsenSys which focuses on building Ethereum-based products.
MetaMask has been a major success with over 30 million monthly active users. MetaMask is open-source developers are free to contribute to the project via github.
