Poloniex is a smaller crypto exchange that was established in 2014 by Tristan D'Agosta. While registered in Seychelles, its headquarters are situated in Boston, Massachusetts.

Poloniex primarily offers spot trading services for over 350 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), TRON (TRX), and several other altcoins.

The platform's offerings extend to spot trading, margin trading, and futures trading, allowing up to 100X leverage. Poloniex has gained some decent traction with a user base of over 1 million users worldwide.

The company employs over 200 employees that provide services in over 180 countries around the world including all of Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

While Poloniex is available in most countries around, below you will find the countries that at the time of writing are not eligeable to use it's services: 

Afghanistan, Burma, the Chinese Mainland, Crimea, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, Zimbabwe, the United States and all US Territories (such as American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands).

If you live in one of these countries, then you will have to turn to alternative cryptocurrency exchanges.

Poloniex License & Regulations

At the time of writing, Poloniex does not hold any type of license and is not regulated by any country as it pertains to it's cryptocurrency services.

Is Poloniex available in the US?

As for the availability of Poloniex in the United States, it has an interesting history. In the past, Poloniex was accessible to customers from the US.

Due to evolving regulations and compliance requirements Poloniex announced in 2017 that it would be limiting the availability of its services to certain US states.

In 2021, the SEC charged Poloniex for operating an unregistered digital asset exchange.

Despite the restrictions, Poloniex has made efforts to comply with regulations and work towards enhancing its services for US-based customers.

In 2020, Poloniex was acquired by a US-based investment firm called Circle, which emphasizes the company's commitment to operating within regulatory frameworks.

Can I use Poloniex in UK & Canada?

Poloniex is available in both the United Kingdom and Canada but with the exception of Ontario for Canadian citizens.

"In order to comply with OSC securities regulations, Poloniex has updated its User Agreement to reflect that the Canadian province of Ontario has become a restricted jurisdiction. Effective January 31st, 2022, Poloniex can no longer support Ontario-based users"
