Summary: Cardano is a decentralized public blockchain that was initially developed as an academic research project by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK). Metamask is a non-custodial browser wallet that supports Ethereum dApps and EVM-compatible blockchains like Ethreum, BSC and Avalanche. While Cardano is currently not supported by MetaMask, it is possible to transfer wrapped ADA tokens to MetaMask. The best option however is to simply buy ADA on an exchange like Binance, and transfer your tokens to a Cardano compatible wallet like Exodus.

Can You Add Cardano (ADA) to MetaMask?

Metamask is one of the worlds most popular browser extension wallets that supports various EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible blockchains, including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Evmos and others.

EVM-compatibility means that these blockchains use the same codebase as Ethereum which allows for developers to easily port over smart contract between these chains.

Cardano on the other hand is not an EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible blockchain.

Instead, it uses its own unique consensus algorithm called Ouroboros, which is a proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol. At the time of writing, ADA and other Cardano native tokens are not supported on the MetaMask wallet.

How To Add Cardano (ADA) to MetaMask?

While you can’t send native ADA tokens to MetaMask, it is possible to send wrapped (pegged) ADA tokens via Binance Smart Chain (BEP 20). Take into account that wrapped assets on a blockchain carry risks such as smart contract vulnerabilities, centralized custody, counterparty risk, price volatility, and regulatory uncertainties. Having said that, if you still want to transfer wrapped Cardano tokens to Metamask, follow these steps below.

1. You must first select Binance Smart Chain on MetaMask
2. Go to assets, import tokens and enter the code below (token contract address)
3. -> 0X3ee2200efb3400fabb9aacf31297cbdd1d435d47

Once done the wrapped ADA token will be available in your MetaMask.

Will MetaMask Ever Support Cardano?

In the future, it is possible that MetaMask will introduce support for a wider range of blockchains which may include Cardano. It is however impossible to predict when this could occur.

About MetaMask

Metamask is the most popular Ethereum-compatible wallet with over 30 million users worldwide. It provides a secure and convenient way to store, manage, and transact with ERC-20 tokens and other EVM-compatible blockchains.

Metamask also offers a range of other features such as built-in support for Ethereum dApps, integration with hardware wallets and the ability to access different networks such as Rinkeby, Ropsten, Kovan and Goerli.

About Cardano (ADA)

Cardano Website

Cardano is an open-source blockchain that provides a secure and compliant platform for the development of decentralized applications.

Cardano enables users to interact with smart contracts while keeping ownership private.

It also offers advanced features such as data privacy, scalability, transaction speed and interoperability. It is powered by a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism and its native token is ADA.
